Wasting time

Tyler leaned against one of the petrol pumps, looking around. Not a car in sight. Maybe no-one needed petrol today. Maybe they had all decided to be enviromentally friendly and left their cars at home. Maybe. He sat on the concrete, wishing he had a pack of cards.

Slacker drove up to the gas pump in his grey Honda Ridgeline. He slowed and stopped the car and pulled out the keys and stepped out of the car.
"Hey, how's business today?"
He asked kindly. He had just the Ridgeline today, no trailer attached.

Slow like you wouldn't believe. You're the first customer all day. He stood up and put one hand on the pump. I guess you want her filled up?

Tyler turned to the petrol pump and unhooked the nozzle. I've just started working here. I only came to Silverstream a few days ago.

He loved his draft horses and did anything with them.

Draft horses, ay? They're cool. I was thinking of getting a Percheron a while back. Before I disrupted my whole life and left my job and family, to go gallivanting all over the country looking for Jack. You entering any in the rodeo?

Slacker said proudly.
"Those two are my pride boys."
He said with a smile. Having the short attention span that he did, Slacker proceeded to take a pocket knife from his pants and turned it over in his hand at his side. He always needed to be doing something. He looked at Tyler and smiled.

Tyler blinked at the sight of the pocket knife, muscles in his arms tensing. When he saw that Slacker was just fiddling with it, he relaxed. I must've spent too much time around Jack after Hailey died... So, you spent much time around the rodeo? There's this guy I'm looking for, see, bronc rider who owes me some money. Best not to tell him the whole story.
