Leo sat in his small cage, bored. He had shredded the newspaper on the cage floor. He had chewed up both of the toys they had given them. He had even invented a game to amuse himself. It went like this: Leo would let his long fluffy tail hang out of the bars at the front of the cage and swing it slowly from side to side. The cat in the cage below him would chase his tail, trying to catch it in her claws. Just when she almost had it, he would whisk it out of the way and a pair of black legs would reach out, clawing at the air and yowling. But the little black cat was asleep right now, offering him no amusement. He sighed and put his head on his paws. Waiting.

Nathan was in a good mood today. Sparky was sleeping at home, with no one to play with. Nathan walked into the dogs cage first. Dogs would be more fun for Sparky than a cat, but Nathan found himself in the cat portion looking at Leo.

Leo heard footsteps and stood up, anticipating some company. He pressed his face against the bars and yowled at the man, his long whiskers poking through. Hello there. I'm Leo. Pleased to meet you. How do you do? But of course, you can't understand me, can you? The large cat started to purr. He knew humans liked that.

"Well aren't you cute... You must atleast be 2." Nathan put his fingers by the cage with the purring cat. "You must be bored...Being in a cage all by yourself. My only question is are you an inside cat or outside?"

Leo sniffed. My dear fellow, I'm three. He nudged the man's finger with his nose. And as to your question, the answer depends on the location. Does your indoors have a roaring fire and cosy armchairs? Does your outdoors have a hay barn full of mice and a nice sunny patch? Leo stopped talking and laughed to himself. Talking to a human! He was being silly. Everyone knew they couldn't understand a word you said. Of course, they could learn to recognise some things, if you trained them well. What about you? Are you an inside human or an outside human? It was an interesting one-way conversation they were having.

"Well if I take you home you'll never be bored I can promise you that. I have a 6 week old Pup. He's somewhat hyper, and I have a huge backyard full of like rats or something that Sparky always chases. So would you be willing to come with me?" Nathan went to his knees and looked at Leo. Then looked at his card. "Oh...Your three...Sorry bout that buddy...Leo is it?"

Leo considered his choices. He could stay here, in a cage, and wait for the eventual day that the black cat caught his tail, bit it, and slowly ate her way up it. Or, he could go home with this man. True, he had a puppy. Probably one that liked chasing tails as much as the black cat. But... the rats. Leo had seen rats before. Like mice, but bigger. He wondered how they would taste. His mouth watered. He hurriedly swallowed his saliva. Yes. It' Leo. Like I said. Silly deaf humans. Those rats sound good, despite the puppy. I'll take up your offer. Leo turned and pressed his side against the cage front, purring.

Nathan looked at the purring cat. "I'll be right back..." Nathan walked out of the room, and returned with a staff member. "I'll be needing Leo here." The staff member opened Leo's cage. The cage slowly creaked. Nathan went onto his knee to see Leo jump out.

Instead of jumping onto the ground, Leo landed on Nathan's knee when he leapt out of the cage. He swung forward and almost overbalanced, but then flicked his tail and stood upright, purring proudly. How's that for accuracy?

"Well Leo lets get home before Sparky wakes up." Nathan put Leo over his shoulder. "I'm sure you'll like your new home." Nathan gave a smile as he looked up at the sky. "Looks like a storm is coming...."

Leo dug his claws into Nathan's shirt and climbed up his shoulder until he was stretched around his neck, back legs and tail on one shoulder, front legs and head on the other. Well, rain's another reason to get home fast. I'm not too fond of rain. Mush! He flicked his new owner with his tail.

Nathan spat out the hair that stayed in his mouth. "Thanks Leo." Nathan unlocked his truck and placed Leo in the passenger's seat. The truck started up and put it in a slow reverse unlike Zurth Nathan was a careless driver.

Leo stood up and put his paws on the armrest, looking out the window. Good grief, this seat's a long way off the ground. They drove past a big dog being led out of the Pet Exchange and Leo hissed at it. Can't get me all the way up here, can ya?

Nathan laughed at Leo as he teased the huge dog. As Nathan started the Ford F-250 and reversed and floored it out of the Pet Exchange to his home.
